Guardia Civil elects its own representatives for the first time

(Madrid, June 18th, 2008)

For the first time ever an election of the representatives on the Guardia Civil staff council will take place in Spain. On June 18th AUGC started its first professional public elections campaign for the Guardia Civil staff council during an assembly in Madrid.

The introduction of an election of representatives on the Guardia Civil staff council is a historical moment for the Spanish Guardia Civil officers and their professional associations including AUGC, a member of EuroCOP.

EuroCOP Treasurer Manuel Lopez congratulates Guardia Civil and AUGC.

Before the passing of the new law last year, which legalized the existence of a professional association for the Guardia Civil police, campaigns and elections like these have not been possible. Now Guardia Civil will be able to elect its own representatives to “improve its professional and working conditions”. AUGC and EuroCOP have supported the process of legalising professional associations from the start.

EuroCOP member organisation representatives from ErNE, Sup including CCOO were on location to support AUGC, as well as EuroCOP Executive Committee Treasurer Manuel Lopez who passed on congratulations from EuroCOP and its President Heinz Kiefer in the name of all police officers across Europe.

“This is a very important event for the Guardia Civil and AUGC and the democratization of the police force. It’s the important next step after becoming recognized as a professional association; “ Manuel Lopez said.

The elections will take place in October 2008.
