The EU Commission outlines its justice and home affairs priorities

(Luxembourg June 10, 2009)

On June 10th the Commission presented its priorities for the area of freedom, security and justice in the next five years, which includes more efficient security co-operations between member states as well as increased exchanges of information on criminal matters.

This is important in particular when it comes to fighting organised crime and terrorism.

One concrete example suggested is to set up an exchange programme, a so called "Erasmus-programme" for police officers and improve the scheme that already exists for judicial staff.

This paper is the Commission's attribution to the so-called "Stockholm Programme", which will replace the Hague Programme and set the priorities for the next five years. It will define the framework for the EU police and customs cooperation, rescue services, criminal and civil law cooperation, asylum, migration and visa policy for the period 2010-2014. It will be discussed at an informal ministerial meeting in July 2009 and adopted in December 2009.

EuroCOP President Heinz Kiefer as well as EuroCOP Executive Committee Member Lillemor Sving Melin, EuroCOP Head of Office Jan Velleman and Swedish Police Union President Jan Karlsen will meet the Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask to discuss among other things the Council's Presidency programme in Stockholm on June 15, 2009.

Sweden will take over the EU Presidency from the Czech Republic on July 1st, 2009.
