Schengen Enlargement hot topic at European Police Congress

(Berlin, 15th February, 2007)

The Schengen Enlargement and the challenges connected to it were hot topics at this year’s European Police Congress in Berlin.

The congress brought European policing representatives and policy makers together, creating a platform of information exchange on matters such as security, technical equipment and cross border cooperation.

Two panels were devoted to “European Border Protection”.

The President of EuroCOP, Heinz Kiefer, headed one of the panels, consisting of representatives from the European Commission and Frontex.

Konrad Freiberg, along with EuroCOP Head of Office
Jan Velleman discuss policing issues with a congress participant.

“That there are two separate panels at this year’s congress dealing with EU Border Protection is hardly a coincidence.

It shows that the challenges connected to the free movement of people and goods inside the EU has ever increasing effects on the protection of the outer EU-borders”, Heinz Kiefer commented.

EuroCOP was present with an exhibition stand along with the German Police Union (GdP).

The stand brought many visitors, from police colleagues to media representatives.

in what the police union has to offer.

In connection to the Congress EuroCOP presented a new information brochure about the Schengen Enlargment, entitled “A common Area of Security requires professional police services – Mastering the challenges of the Schengen Enlargement”.
