Pooling national experiences - EuroCOP Working Group to investigate health and security implications of digital radio.

A core requirement for effective police work is the ability to communicate - instantly, reliably, and securely. There is no doubt that, through its technical innovation, digital radio provides increased security for police officers carrying out this work.
However the discussion of the possible health risks involved is nevertheless an extremely important one and needs to be further investigated.

In March 2005, the Spring EuroCOP Committee in Luxembourg decided that the EuroCOP Safer Policing Working Group would be tasked with addressing these issues in parallel.  Jan Berry, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales highlighted that it is difficult to obtain neutral information on these possible health risks as experts remain divided on the matter.

EuroCOP Member Organisations have decided to join their efforts in order to ensure that the concerns of police officers with respect to digital radio are addressed. In addition, the pooling of the various national experiences is sure to add value to Member Organisations’ efforts to influence health and safety standards set under EU labour law.
